Essay Idea

Our essay topic was a persuasive essay. I don't remember the exact prompt but the reason we choose it was mainly because one person in our group said she was good at it , and the other three said that it wasn't their best. We thought it would be a good chance for that one person to help the other three and that way they can all build up their persuasive writing skills. another reason is that obesity is a very big problem right now more than ever, and its easy to get statistics that will help prove your point and that's a good skill to have ; being able to include actual research and facts.

Pros And Cons : Obesity

Obesity is a big problem in the world , we all know it. Some schools are taking extreme measure and sending home "fat letters" , which lets the child's parents know that their children are overweight. I personally think that its pointless because the parent should know that their child is obese , after all they are the ones that feed them and buy the food and the snacks they eat. On the other hand , it could be a wake up call to some parents.

Some experts believe that this is a good idea because it can prevent children from future health problems such as heart failure and joint problems . Which is a good point, it could potentially save the life of a kid we can say because it will give that parents a reality check. once parents receive this letter they can be more aware of what kinds of foods they decide to buy. Also, they can encourage their kids to be more active and to spend as little time as possible on video games or whatever it may be.

Another positive thing about informing a parent would be that the school and the parent could work together to help the child out. Once the parent gets the reality check that was needed , they could go talk to a dietitian and they can work together to change the eating habits of not only the child , but the entire family which could prevent future health issues as mentioned earlier.

Other expert argue that these letter can potentially cause a child , most likely a girl, to become more self conscious and develop a eating disorder which eventually could be fatal ; also a good point. the point of these letters would be to help a child get healthy , but if the results are negative the child would end up hurting themselves by developing a eating disorder. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness ( South Carolina Department of Mental Health ) .

Another point that was mentioned was bulling. These letters could result in a child being bullied and that could also be tragic. Kids can find out which parents were sent these "fat letters" and then the kids would be easy targets for bullying. " The statistics on bullying are upsetting. In a recent national survey of overweight sixth graders, 24 percent of the boys and 30 percent of the girls experienced daily teasing, bullying or rejection because of their size. The number doubles for overweight high school students with 58 percent of boys and 63 percent of girls experiencing daily teasing, bullying or rejection because of their size." (  By JoAnn Stevelos, MS, MPH) .

Now that I've written this my opinions have changed . Yes, parents show be aware of their child's health and whether they are obese or not. but truth be told , a lot of parents need that reality check. A lot of parents do need to be informed , but should it be the school to do it ? I don't think so. I believe that that is a discussion for parents and the child to have with their pediatrician , after all they do get paid to look after the child health. Once that discussion has taken place , the rest is up to the parents and the child.

Text Analysis #1

I decided to do my text analysis on the article that Johna posted about " fat letters''. So basically , some schools are sending letters home to let parents know that their children is overweight. Some people agree that this sis a good idea and others don't like it . I,  personally , think its a waist of time because parents DO know that their kids are overweight. I mean , how could they not know? They would notice when they go shopping for clothes. I feel like the only way a parent wouldn't notice is if they aren't involved in their child's life and just basically let them do whatever they please, other than that the parent would notice.

MY OPINION ISN'T (A) RIGHT

Well , my class didn't do a Socratic seminar because not very many people actually came through with the assignment and read the article. I've read it at least 3 times and I'm not sure i fully understand it. I understand that saying " i have a right to my opinion " isn't a way to end an argument because obviously if you are entitled to your own opinion then so is the person that you were arguing with . So, saying that only creates a whole different argument , that's what i think anyway.  You r opinion is just that , an opinion. most likely there is something out there that proves that your opinion is wrong so at the end of the day your opinion doesn't really matter .

* Note : when i say " your opinion" , i mean everybody's opinion.

REFLECTIONS ON WEEK 1

1) To be honest I think that the only factor that will affect my final outcome in  this class is myself. Yeah, there are a few little thing here and there that can produce some type of affect , but when it comes down to it its all on me and my dedication to this class.

2) The experience that has made the greatest impact in my life ? Well , it was a family type of situation so I don't feel to comfortable posting it on my blog , sorry :/ . I can say that although it was a bad situation with bad consequences , I learned a lot from that experience and it help me grow up .

3) I'm excited about everything and anything that ill be learning through this class . I think that learning to be a better writer will help me be a better reader and that's a good thing because its an everyday life thing . Also , ill be able to expand my vocabulary which is exciting because I will sound more sophisticated and will be taken more serious when talking to people.

A Truly Interesting Piece Of Non Fiction

http://santamariatimes.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/possible-motive-details-in-murder-case-revealed/article_7a6d9d54-07cb-11e3-bceb-0019bb2963f4.html

I read this the other day, honestly I don't remember how I came across it. When Dr.Preston said a piece of non fiction I'm honestly not sure if this is what he meant. I honestly don't understand how someone can possibly go through with killing someone. Like seriously , who are you to take someones life? Nothing and i mean NOTHING justifies murder, not in my eyes anyway . Killing someone over something so stupid such as money , is it really worth jail ? Not to mention that in this case the consequence for the killer was worse than jail , he was murdered !

What is Expository Composition ?

Expository: intended to explain or describe something
Composition: the action of putting things together; formatting or construction

When I was signing up for senior classes my Guidance tech suggested this class . She explained that in this class we would be doing a lot of discussions about real life situations . She also said that it would help me become a better writer , that's why I took this class . But , now that the school year actually started I realize that its going to be so much more than just that and to be honest Im really excited !

Its All Latin To Me

" dimidium facti qui coepit habet: sapere aude, incipe "

Translation : " Dare to be wise when the beginning is half done Begin"

What I believe this quote means is that someone who just as much as beings something is already half way done . Once you start something , you have to go through with it and actually complete it . The second part of that quote is translated into " dare to know ". Don't be scared to learn more and be more educated and wise .

i Think this quote is related to this course because we will be trying many new things this year, and it will be new so we cant be close minded . we have to be willing to learn new things and educate ourselves. We Started this new thing by simply signing up for this course , now we have to go through with it and finish what we started by giving it our all !

My Big Question

Sure little kids ask a lot of questions, they are naturally curious . Even though I am 17 years old , i still ask A LOT of questions , only because I'm still SUPER curious!  i guess one of my main questions would have to do with religion ; is God real ? Because if he is , he makes some people suffer a lot . Did he actually create us ? And if he did , why did he let the world and his people suffer so much ? I guess I just don't understand why if he is such a good and powerful God why he lets terrible things happen to "his children". None of this religion thing makes since to me really. I know I want to believe in something , I guess I'm just not sure what I believe in yet? Would I feel more complete if I were to believe in God ? In a way , I'm somewhat jealous of people who do have so much faith in God because I want that . But I just can't , because I have so many doubts . It wouldn't be fair to myself pretending like i believe in something when the truth is i don't yet.
